The ratings for yield, stalk strength and dry down were supplied by the seed companies themselves at Better Farming's request. For one reason or another, not all companies supplying seed in Ontario may have responded to the request for information.
The ratings are as follows: *** = 'excellent' or 'exceptional'; ** = 'above average'; * = 'average'. Similarly, 'S' indicates that the breeder believes that the hybrid is well suited for silage, 'G' indicates a suitability for grain, and 'D' indicates a dual-purpose corn. Some companies are now producing corn that they feel is best suited for high moisture grain and have indicated so in the same column.
If there is a 'Y' in the OCC column beside a hybrid, it indicates that the variety has been tested in Ontario Corn Committee trials and more objective information on its performance is available by going to the Ontario Corn Producers Association Web site. An 'N' indicates that it has not been tested or that testing is not completed.
Some hybrids have special traits of interest to growers for either production or marketing reasons. We have tried to indicate those traits in the "comments" column of the chart.
These traits are indicated as follows: RR = Roundup Ready herbicide tolerance; LL = Liberty Link herbicide resistance; Bt = Bacillus Thingerius insect resistance; YG = YieldGard Bt genetics; W = Waxy.
For the second year, an additional feature has been added. The Market Choices (MC) column clearly identifies hybrids which are not yet approved for importation by the European Union.
Grain grown from MC seeds is approved for safe use in the environment, feed and food, in North America, and must be channeled towards markets here. The hybrid has genetics that have not yet been approved for sale in Europe.BF
