Vets don’t believe system is ‘broken’

In many of the controversial OSPCA (Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) cases that were presented in the April 2006 issue of Better Farming, veterinarians within the membership of the Grey-Bruce Veterinary Association (GBVA) provided professional services. In all of these cases, our members felt that there were serious and significant animal welfare issues that we feel were dealt with in the most appropriate manner possible, considering the circumstances.

Although there may be room for improvement within the OSPCA organization, we do not feel that the system is “broken” as suggested by your articles. From our contact with the Grey/Bruce OSPCA we have time and again been thoroughly impressed with their professionalism, knowledge and dedication.

Indeed, it would seem that the OSPCA, GBVA and the majority of farmers have at least one common goal: to encourage “better farming” through the maintenance of healthy, productive animals and by promoting a positive public impression of the agricultural community. BF
