Kerns Public School Fall FairKerns Public School, located half way between New Liskeard and Earlton, (home of the 2009 International Plowing Match) in northern Ontario, continues the tradition of an annual fall fair in the first week of September, and has been doing so ever since the school was built in 1961. Kerns Public School has 103 students, but has a fall fair which would rival many of the larger schools who continue with this tradition. Every spring, staff and students begin the preparation for that year’s fair and the sheets outlining the categories, rules and regulations are passed round. The organization of this fair is no small task. Teachers and students alike organize, discuss and delegate the jobs that need to be done so that the fair goes off without a hitch. The fair includes a parade, a large display area and prizes galore. Exhibits fall under a variety of categories, including grains, fruits and vegetables, flowers, arrangements, personal hobbies, needlework, eggs, poultry, small animals, baking (lots of baking) canning, pre-schoolers and a fall fair poster contest. You name, it Kerns Fall Fair has it. We may be small, but we do it BIG! This fair and the families that attend it have been doing so for generations and will continue this tradition for generations, no doubt. In our estimation, the Kerns Public School Fall Fair is about community and community is what makes this fair the tradition it is.BF Celine Godreau, Write to Us: We welcome views from all readers.
