Welsh farmers seek love on a milk carton
Love has been in the air and at the breakfast table in Wales since January
25, which is St. Dwynwen's Day, a day dedicated to the Welsh patron saint
of lovers. Stickers featuring members of an organic dairy farmers' co-operative
called Calon Wen were placed on milk cartons in the hopes that curious singles
will respond.
"Fancy a Farmer?" ads featuring both men and women will now
appear on Calon Wen's entire range
of whole and semi-skimmed organic milk on an on-going basis.
The campaign is being delivered through the non-profit dating website
www.pishynwales.com.
By the last week of January, the site had received 30,000 visits, which
is thousands of time the usual number. Aran
Jones, who runs the site, says that in addition to perhaps bringing
people together, the ads also serve to highlight the social hardships
faced by Welsh dairy farmers, who are both isolated from the hip city
dating scene and from people their own age who have left the rural areas
to seek their fortunes.
Jones says the ads are a way to try to "keep people in the Welsh
countryside by helping them meet each other."
Iwan Jones (no relation), who owns
a farm and 100 cows in Denbighshire, 355 kilometres west of London, agrees.
"The Welsh countryside is a great place to live, with stunning scenery,
but it can be hard place to find a date." He has received several
messages through the Web site so far. Jones says he's open-minded and
willing to meet any kind of woman, as long as she has a "good attitude
about life." BF
