Everyone wants all animals treated humanely but do we really need more rules and legislation . Another bunch will be leaving the industry

It's about what a pressure group was able to achieve against science and common sense.

these changes to the code will not make the groups any happier than they were before. their mission statement is to have everyone become a vegan or vegetarian which would therefore lead to no animal agriculture. making these changes to the code was an exercise in futility. i will be exiting the industry when forced to by this code.

This issue is all about giving our customer what they want...and personally, I'm quite happy to give the sows what makes them happy to make my life easier.
Having said that...sows are probably better off in stalls than in a poorly designed or a poorly run loose sow system. Not everyone will be able to work with the sows in a loose sow system and not everyone is going to get "good advice" for their system, but there are lots of sows in loose sow systems and they perform as good as or better than in stalls. We have to keep up with the rest of the world!

As other posts have said the issue driving this is not about animal welfare its about agendas and the new rules will just be a stepping stone too more demands or regulations . I believe Curtiss did the best he could under the circumstances . Let's see Carol Mitchell does away with single desk selling , Ontario Pork sells-closes all its marketing yards to save 10 cents , direct contracting approved so you have too compete with your neighbour for price and have CQA ,Nutrient management plans, TQA and the list goes on as more pork producers leave. How many "NEW" producers that didn't have family or business ties too the industry have started in pigs in the last 10 years? Anybody care too guess what Ontario Pork business will look like in 2025??

Finally someone with some common sense about what has decimated the hog industry.

So many conflicting storylines,on one hand we have the federal Government patting itself on the back for increasing exports with the CETA deal and now the South Korean trade signing.Meanwhile Pork producers are getting slapped down by Animal rights agenda's and the ongoing PED.

There are Positives and Negatives in everything but in the Pork business they seem to be farther apart than ever.
