Success to me is that we are able to pay our bills and continue investing in our farm, whether that’s upgrading equipment or investing in land. It’s also the family – is everyone happy? Success looks like everyone feeling appreciated and like a contributing member, and we are all getting along well. What’s your favourite piece of equipment? My favourite piece of farm equipment is probably the combine, but I also really like driving the Cat. When we buy land, we do a lot of work to increase the amount of seeding acres, which requires using the Cat, and I enjoy doing that. But in terms of field work, my favourite is the combine. What advice would you give to new farmers? Don’t ever assume that you know everything. There’s always something to learn, and things are changing all the time. Always be willing to learn new ways of doing or looking at things. Lots of people get set in their ways and you can’t afford to do that in this industry. You have to be able to roll with the punches and look at things from different perspectives. Even if it’s been done that way for 20 years, things improve and things change.
