The stocks surpassed records set in 2006 for Ontario and 2005 in Quebec and in total rose nearly 15 per cent over the same time in the previous year to 9.6 million tonnes, StatsCan said in a report issued today. On-farm stocks in Ontario totaled 4.2 million tonnes and in Quebec 3.1 million tonnes.
In contrast, total soybean stocks fell to 1.7 million tonnes, a drop of nearly 35 per cent over the amounts available at the same time in the previous year. On-farm stocks were lower as well.
The report says stocks of grains and oilseeds in the Prairie provinces were also down as of Dec. 31, 2007, compared with the same date in 2006. In partiuclar, total stocks of wheat decreased nearly 30 per cent or 6.4 million tonnes from the year before. BF
