The largest biodiesel fuel production plant in Canada is set to begin operations near Welland this October.
The converted factory will produce 170 million litres of fuel each year from about 160,000 metric tonnes of soybeans and canola, says Barry Kramble, the chief executive officer of Great Lakes Biodiesel. Discussions are continuing between the company and the Grain Farmers of Ontario, Soy 20/20 and the Canola Council of Canada to co-ordinate the delivery of raw materials, he says.
“Soybeans and canola produce premium fuel. It’s what the Canadian market wants,” says Kramble.
Great Lakes Biodiesel will supply the finished product to the nation’s oil companies so that they can meet the federal government’s new mandated target of two per cent biofuel in diesel fuel.
“That has created a marketing opportunity for us, and we will be able to supply them,” says Kramble. BF
