The University of Guelph Food Institute has received $700,000 in donations to help with its work on all aspects of global food production, safety and security.
The university announced the donations from Longo Brothers Fruit Markets and Darcy and Cathy Rector in a May 6 press release.
The food institute spans all seven colleges at the university and in addition to addressing food production, safety and security matters it also looks at the impact of food on culture, economies and the environment.
The institute will help the university to share its strengths in food education and research with food processors, consumers, non-governmental organizations and other local, national and international partners, the release says.
Rob Gordon, dean of the university’s Ontario Agricultural College, will lead an international advisory panel at the institute, while Prof. Rickey Yada is its scientific director. He is the holder of the Canada research chair in food protein structure. BF
