Use caution when combining herbicides in the tank

Last year the federal government changed the rules for tank mixing herbicide

Growers can now legally apply any herbicide in a tank mix as long as both herbicides are registered on that crop. Growers must use the appropriate surfactants as per label instructions.

There are some tank mixes that may seem logical but you do not want to do. The addition of bromoxynil (Pardner) with glyphosate for atriplex control is an example. This tank combination will seriously injure and possibly kill corn. Another tank mix that can seriously damage corn is Distinct plus glyphosate. Do not use either mix.

For soy beans there are some interesting tank mix scenarios. Assure controls volunteer corn at 100 ml per acre. You can now tank mix Assure with other herbicides to control volunteer corn in soybeans. There is antagonism with Assure and some other products. If you are tank mixing Assure with Clean Sweep you should increase the Assure rate by 50 ml per acre. If tank mixing with Pinnacle you should increase the Assure rate by 25 ml/ac. These are examples of things that you can do.

The change in legislation is designed to help growers. It is not a signal to throw any concoction into a spray tank because “it should work.” Before you use any non-registered tank mix make sure you know what you are doing. Ask a knowledgeable person first. BF
