Chicken wing profits linked to Super Bowl Friday, May 6, 2011 The spectre of a long-term lockout of National Football League players sparked fears that chicken wing suppliers' profits would fly away.Chicken wing sales surge at sports bars and other locations in the fall and winter during the NFL season, with wholesale prices increasing steadily during the January run up to the Super Bowl, unarguably the greatest sporting event in North America.Stock market analysts are taking notice of the potential losses for Sanderson Farms, the largest supplier of wings and breast tenders to U.S. food service companies and casual dining restaurants. Analysts also note that 10 per cent of sales in the 750-store Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant chain, based in Minnesota, are linked to NFL games. The loss of an entire season could cost the restaurant $15 million in sales.Reports indicate that the wholesale price of wings in the United States has dropped to 95 cents a pound in early 2011 from $1.74 a year before.
