Manitoba Pork celebrates bacon

This team is sizzling! The Winnipeg Goldeyes baseball team played a game in bacon-patterned shirts, Metro reports. Last year, Manitoba Pork declared August to be Bacon Month, in honour of Manitoba having Canada's largest bacon-processing facility. To celebrate, the Goldeyes wore jerseys with bacon print for a game against the Amarillo Thunderheads. According to Metro, the jerseys were auctioned off after the game with proceeds going to the Goldeyes' Field of Dreams Foundation. The concourse also had bacon-themed items such as bacon poutine, hot dogs with bacon and maple-bacon cupcakes.

According to its website, Manitoba Pork is planning several other activities including a Barbecue and Blues Festival as well as a "Bacon Party" near the end of August. Susan Riese, Manitoba Pork's manager of public relations and consumer marketing programs, told Farmscape that "not many people are aware of how important the pork industry and its processing plants are to Manitoba's economy." She added that the Bacon Makes it Better campaign "is one way of creating that awareness and some pride in Manitoba's pork industry."
