Maybe don't rely on chickens Saturday, January 9, 2016 According to CyberLex, a newsletter which comments on data security, the Spruce Manor Special Care Home in Saskatchewan ran afoul of the Saskatchewan Information and Privacy (SIP) Commissioner after choosing a chicken farm to dispose of their clients' personal information.In Saskatchewan, the Health Information Protection Act requires that organizations handling personal health information dispose of it in a way that protects patient privacy. According to the Winnipeg Free Press, Spruce Manor's choice of disposal method prompted an investigation lead by SIP Commissioner Ronald Kruzeniski who – in a not-very-surprising move – recommended in his final report that Spruce Manor not use a chicken farm to destroy records. He also added: "I find using a chicken farm to destroy records unacceptable."Some people prefer to use shredded paper as bedding in chicken coops but, when disposing of private documents, CyberLex recommends that you don't leave things to chance: either destroy it yourself or hire a professional service.
