Danish co-op helps farmers to convert their barns Tuesday, April 2, 2013 Danish Crown, Europe's largest pork-producing company, began offering farmers a bonus of 2.5 cents per kilogram of pigs, with a maximum of 8,000 pigs per facility, to build new sow barns geared to group housing. The company is also offering 1.2 cents per kilogram of pig to farmers interested in converting their existing facilities.The reason? Production is trending downward in Denmark, Europe's pork-producing powerhouse, and needs to be rectified. Producers have been quitting as the deadline to convert to group housing from sow gestation stalls neared. The goal is to increase total production of pigs by 520,000 annually.Danish Crown is a co-operative owned by farmers, accounting for 90 per cent of the pigs slaughtered in Denmark.
