Pork producers blame supply management

Ontario pork producers say supply management in other sectors is damaging their industry.

The only disagreement among delegates at this year’s annual general meeting was over how heavy handed they want Ontario Pork to be in lobbying government to curb supply management. Despite a failed attempt to soften it, a resolution calling on Ontario Pork to work with other non-supply managed groups to urge the government to put trade ahead of dairy and poultry farmer protection passed 68 to 13.

The long-simmering debate has come to the fore as Canada negotiates trade deals in Europe and Asia that pork producers feel would open up markets for them. BF
