Better Farming’s field editor brought home two awards from this year’s Canadian Farm Writers’ and Broadcasters’ awards competition on the weekend.
At the Canadian Farm Writers’ Federation’s awards ceremony in Niagara Falls on Saturday, Mary Baxter was announced the winner of the Dick Beamish gold award for press feature and the Jack Cram silver award for monthly press reporting.
The articles recognized were “Lyme Disease: The painful and hard-to-diagnose infection” (press feature), which appeared in the May 2011 issue of Better Farming and “The obstacle-strewn road to success in agritourism” (monthly press reporting), which appeared in the December 2010 issue.
Published 10 times a year, Better Farming is Ontario’s largest circulating farm business publication. It is owned by AgMedia Inc.
The awards honour excellence in agricultural journalism, broadcasting, communications and photography in Canada.
According to its website, the CFWF represents nearly 400 English-speaking agricultural print and broadcast journalists and communicators across Canada through five regional associations in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Eastern Canada. This year, the organization hosted the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists’ annual congress.
A full list of winners will be posted shortly on the Federation’s website, www.cfwf.ca BF

It is interesting when you talk to say an experienced farm writer about as an example the insurance plan RMP for grain farmers they think farmers pay the premium but get it back when the farmer gets a claim, they dont realize how expensive the premium total per year can be.
When you quiz these people on many things important to stories, you ask,.... are they writing blindly? Are they getting the important details correct?
Is the best of journalism written for and about farmers across Canada giving measurable useful results for farmers betterment or is it just constant puff and stuff sound good filler to sell copy and advertisement?
