Canada’s newest BSE case is ‘feed related’ says Ontario’s chief vet

The BSE was 'feed-related', and this is what we're going to find out. If you go looking for a feed-explanation, instead of, say, organophospate pest treatment, you are going to find the former, no matter what.

I believe prions (the active infection agent for BSE) can stay whole and are likely infectious unless exposed to temperatures of 900 deg F for 4 hours, or 1400 deg F (char point for meat and fat) momentarily.

I believe many farmers use spray dried bovine blood as a milk replacement for calves. This dried blood is not processed to deactivate any prions present, so there is a risk the calf could become infected.

Stanley Prusiner, who won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discovery of prions, says the practice of feeding cattle blood to young calves is "a really stupid idea," because it could complete the "cannibalistic" circuit blamed for the spread of the disease.

I believe it is currently permitted to feed beef byproducts to chicken, and that chicken litter (manure + bedding material) is fed to cattle by some farmers.

Both of these are known pathways to re-infect the next generation of cattle.

BSE will never end as long as we have a short term viewpoint. What we need to do is ensure a 100% open circuit between all farms and all generations of cattle so that we can finally eradicate this disease from Canada.

Short term profits or long term health.

The choice should be an easy one.
