A new report from the Guelph-based George Morris Centre paints a grim picture of ethanol production's impact on Ontario's meat sector.

Critics of ethanol or other biofuels are always quick to point out that they are subsidized. What is very seldom pointed out was that the subsidies that exist in Canada came about because of new taxes being applied to the end product ethanol. A 200 million litre ethanol plant will see more than $50 million taxes both federal and provincial applied to its production even before considering normal business and property taxes.

Moreover while calculating the value to the economy they have completely missed the fact that retail values for gasoline are in the $1.15-1.20 range and wholesale ethanol is selling for about 60 cents a litre. To completely ignore that spread while calculating economic value is a rather sophomoric blunder for a paper purporting to be a scholarly investigation.

What is especially galling about this article is the rather matter of fact way they state that corn prices are too high and we ought to have the cheapest corn prices in North America for the benefit of the livestock sector completely ignoring the fact that cost of production costs for corn are higher here in Ontario. A good business takes into consideration the viability of its suppliers ; seems our "independent researchers " have only one end of the equation in mind.
