Ontario garlic is severely suffering from stem and bulb nematode (Ditylenchus dipsaci). The same nematode is a problem in pea crop at Saskatchewan/ Saskatoon, which I surveyed last year. In both the cases the nematode spreads to clean area through planting material. There is need to have a strong team of of Plant Nematologists, which Canada is presently lacking to demarcate clean and infested areas; and for screeing planting material before planting for nematode contamination.

Canada is big exporter of pulses and pulse grains have been found to be infected with stem and bulb nematode. The pulse importing countries are at risk of introducing the devastating nematode along with grains or bulbs of garlic. The nematode is likely to affect exports from Canada of pea and garlic for planting/ consumption.

Agriculture departments of government especially quarantine agencies in Canada need to be serious. The nematode may ruen the economy of farmers in the infected areas.
