Gerry Ritz returns as Canada’s minster of agriculture, agri-food and minister of the Canadian Wheat Board. Ritz’s reappointment was announced at the ministers’ swearing in ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa Wednesday morning. Ritz represents the riding of Battlefords – Lloydminster in Saskatchewan. Christian Paradis, Mégantic—L'Érable MP, replaces Jean-Pierre Blackburn as minister of state (agriculture). Blackburn was defeated in the election earlier this month in his riding of Jonquière-Alma. Paradis is also minister of industry. BF

Actually, the death of the Canadian Wheat Board is likely to be in 2012, the death of supply management is likely to be 2013, and the death of subsidized ethanol is likely to be in about 2014 - but on the other hand, given that the Tory stronghold of Alberta is cattle and oil country, ethanol could go before supply management.
In any event, they all need to be history, for the sake of Canadian taxpayers and consumers, as well as the next generation of Canadian farmers.
We do live in interesting, and exciting, times.

Not only the wheat board but all marketing boards are on the table to disappear.
Total free trade with the USA. and beyond.
Quebec has no clout left and can't fight Harper any more thanks to Layton.
Another week of wet weather forecast and it will be interesting to see if ON rural MP's can convince Ritz that ON farmers should be blessed with a similar and corresponding largesse that Ritz showered (no pun intended) on his Western constituents when they had there turn in the rain barrel last year.....
