Flue Tobacco board chairperson Linda Vandendriessche welcomes the RCMP’s recently released Contraband Tobacco Enforcement Strategy to counter tobacco smuggling. But she says more attention must be paid to the farmer side of the equation.

"The strategy spells out losses suffered by manufacturers and governments." The trade and the government have put the growers on the rack for years and now THEY are whining about the losses THEY have suffered. Please spare me. The hypocrisy in this country is sometimes beyond the pale.

Tobacco farmers are unfortunately at the bottom of the supply chain and keep getting hammered while the trade and governments reap tremendous dollars off the industry. Its time promises and commitments are acted upon to give these people some dignity and get out of tobacco. This relentless neglect from trade and government has created an overwhelming emotional and stressful enviroment at the farm level and is going to lead to more suicides and family breakdowns as time progresses.
