Ontario’s turkey producers and processors have reached an agreement to share changes in the cost of feed until the end of the quota year April 30.
The agreement, made earlier this month, averted an Ontario Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Appeal Tribunal hearing scheduled for today.
Turkey Farmers of Ontario, the provincial marketing board, sets the prices for live turkeys. Processors were concerned that the rising costs of corn and soybeans would “drive costs into the system,” said Jeff McDowell, a member of the Ontario Poultry Processors Association turkey committee in January.
The committee represents three processors that process 90 per cent of the tonnage in Ontario.
Janet Schlitt, Turkey Farmers general manager, says the new agreement took effect retroactive to Jan. 10. BF
