The announcement by AAFC Minister Ritz (Wed. 16 Jan.) as written by Susan Mann looks like a lot of hype and little substance. Apparently, the commitment was made by US and Canadian governments in Dec. 2011; now in January 2013 they still don't have even the framework finalized. WOW! Notably, neither Ritz nor his CFIA official Lisa Murphy even mentioned BSE -- probably the most costly of the "foreign animal diseases" -- and it wrecked the market for all of us in eastern Canada because of ONE cow in Alberta, some 3,000 km from my beef farm. Experience has shown that US protectionism (e.g. COOL, plus a host of trade challenges over the years) will liktely continue; they simply don't want to compete on an equal footing! There is virtually NO evidence that the US will agree and abide by any meaningful zonation.
