Local food is great and all but it is up to the parents to teach their brats cooking skills at home . Every thinks of school as daycare for kids no longer in diapers . It is not up to the school board staff to teach basic cooking skills when the child won't have the tools at home such as fresh food and a working stove to cook with . Now adays if it isn't microwave ready you won't get it at home . You likely stand a better chance of getting Mikey D's or Taco Bell take out or as pit stop . Our farm leaders try as hard as they do , do not grasp the fact of htings being different in the city kids life as to what it was when they were a young seed growing up on the farm .

Wow what a slammer.
Liberals Majority .
Have anyone notice that the cities voted them in and the country side was PC.
Does that mean the rural Folks are going to get the shaft and the Urban will get the Gold.
Ontario will become a three world Province or I mean the Rural will.

Tradition says faremrs vote PC. Not sure this reflects well on farmers.
We have a premier who also served as ag minister. Many farmers bought into the PC rhetoric about her being a part time minister rather than trying to work with her. The fact is she was generally as available as any other agminister and provided farmers with a lot more clout. Some rural ridings elected Liberal candidates and some rural Liberal candidates like Stuart Skinner did quite well.
I don't think Wynne is the kind of person to punish farmers but maybe it's time for farmers to stop being traditional and start voting with their brains and weighing the issues.

What tradition are you talking about ? Being a minister is a full time gig and so more would being premier . Wynne wanted to be ag minister only to try secure some rural votes if needed . That is if she could not get a majority by the city vote .

Yup that's exactly how the PC rhetoric goes.
Have you ever heard the expression if you want a job done ask a busy person?
The farming community had the ear of the premier in an unprecedented way and they blew it.

Just curious, however, the proof is in the pudin as in it's about the $$$. Could someone please list her ag accomplishments over the past year?

The tradition has been that the PC's are less friendly to ag . Don't blame farmers for the rural PC vote . There are many more rural votes that are not farmers .

The leadership change that will be happening with the PC's is going to be a key part in the next election .
As for the NDP they too need a new leader . Andrea made the mistake of waiting a year before she voted against the budget .
If John Vanthoff was the NDP leader I would vote NDP .

Not only is there not going to be any increase in RMP funding, it will be lucky if RMP is in existence at all by the time of the next election.

It also means that everything else that farm groups were asking for, such as rural natural gas service, isn't going to happen either.

Most importantly, it's going to mean that agriculture is going to be a subset of what consumers see as the food industry, and not the other way around where agriculture dominates - and that's going to be a bitter pill for farmers and farm groups to swallow.

To that end, we can also expect to see increasingly-stringent environmental restrictions on primary agriculture, even further cuts to OMAFRA and farm programs, and the increased delegation of unsightly things like wind towers onto farm land.

Strephen Thompson, Clinton ON

RMP will be put on the back burner until just before the next election with the 4 year mandate of a majority .

Rural gas is and was a Liberal election ploy to try get rural votes . It was not brought forth by any farm group . A farm group endorsed it and tried to call it their idea . If farmers truly believe that gas is going to be put down all roads they are dreaming in technicolor .

Perhaps we should simply lobby for similar programs to what the USA has. Then again, that would mean G&O would have similar revenue insurance programs to what U.S. grain farmers have and Livestock would have what? And fruit and veg would have what? What livestock countervail you say? Ritz is correct RMP plus AgriInvest for livestock at least is countervailable!

Yep...lets give all the help to those poor crop producers...don't give anything to the livestock sector...oh, wait then crops would have to find another market for their product, since livestock would shrink...or they would take less money for their product.
You try to make it sound so simple. You want simple? Remove all government help and interference (SM, RMP, AgrInvest, etc.). I'm in favor of that but most farmers are so used to sucking up to government that it will be a tough sell.
Although, by the time this new Ontario Government spends all the money they've promised, they will be so broke that you can kiss all your gov't help goodbye!

You missed the point, which was a level playing field with U.S. subsidies such as revenue insurance etc. etc. which flow almost entirely to the U.S. crop sector.

Just a simple question. What are the U.S. livestock and fruit and veg. subsidy programs that Canadian? Ontario livestock and fruit and veg compete on an export basis with? There was a point in time that livestock were paranoid of subsidy countervail but now they seem to be content with not sharing their numbers so that uncle Sam can countervail.

Agriculture is in fact already just part of the food industry.

It is not a bitter pill, it is reality. Farming is food production. No surprise.

The Urban/Rural gap just got wider, what the GTA wants they get. However what disgusts me more is that the PC and NDP could not see that!!
