Car maker jumps on the bacon bandwagon

Thursday, October 10, 2013

Making bacon and proud of it? The 2014 Ford Fiesta with its bacon detail package might be right for you.

According to a Ford news release, coinciding with International Bacon Day on Aug. 31, custom bacon graphics are available on new Fiesta sub-compact cars. Manufacturers' suggested retail prices range from US$14,000-$21,400 for the car alone, but the wrap itself doesn't come cheap. According to the Los Angeles Times, a full vinyl wrap costs US$3,300. That's 10 strips of bacon around the car. Ford's press release says the strips over the rear wheels are for drivers on a diet (or maybe on a tighter budget).

The press release quotes Allan Benton, CEO of Benton's Country Hams, located in North Madisonville, Tenn. "In the 40 years I've been in this business, I've never seen so much interest in bacon. It's being used in bourbon, chocolate, ground beef, caramel corn and whatever else you can think of. This car just makes so much sense." (But wouldn't a bacon-wrapped Ford F150 make even more sense?)

Alas, the product is not available for any vehicle marketed in Canada, says Joe Stomp, Ford/3M Canada's sales and marketing manager. BP
